There are advantages as well as disadvantages of an SMS. Although this service saves time and helps in easy communication, it can also prove to be harmful.

The technology of short messaging service or SMS was introduced in the late 1980s. Since its creation, it has become an important technology that is used by millions and millions of people. Invented by engineers from Norway, this technology was basically designed so that a small message could be sent whenever the receiver’s cell phone was out of range or switched off. But as times are changing, so is the usage of SMSs.

Nowadays, SMS is sent not only when there is emergency but whenever a user wants to communicate with his or her friend or relative or others.

Meaning and role
Also, SMS is a service that performs the function of storing and forwarding your information. The biggest advantage of this technology is that the receiver can get the sender’s message in just a fraction of seconds.

ne more interesting point about these short messages is that it is not necessary that the receiver’s mobile phone should be in close range of the sender but if the receiver’s cell phone is turned off, the message gets stored on the SIM card of the receiver and whenever the receiver switch on his or her mobile phone, the message gets delivered.

Special features
Other special features of SMS include consummation of very less time and the most useful way for communication for hearing impaired or deaf people. The best part of this service is that the sender can send messages to numerous people at the same time. Popularly known as ‘broadcasting’, this service is also used by business organizations to contact large chunks of employees at a same time thereby saving time as well as energy.

Moreover, sending an SMS is far better as it is cheaper than making a phone call each time you want to communicate to someone. It also gives users the facility of discretion, as you do not get disturbed if you are busy with some important task.

Pros and cons
Other advantages of an SMS are that of being a personal and SPAM- free one. But as it is said that a coin has two sides, similar is the case with SMSs. Although they have a large list of advantages, there are disadvantages as well.

The biggest disadvantage is that these short messages disturb the receiver if he or she is busy and these days various promotional messages also keep on disturbing the user. In addition, it is found that people are not comfortable with using keypads for typing purposes. People also try to send an SMS while driving which in turn proves to be dangerous and harmful.

Thus, an SMS has both pros and cons but as the times are changing, people have become addicted to it, which in turn is a disadvantage in itself. Although these short messages are beneficial for working people but it has left its negative impact on young minds as they often neglect their studies due to this fascinating advancement in technology.

So, according to one’s needs and demands, one should avail the benefits of this service and make communication better and easier.
