It has been seen that there has been the extensive use of emotion icons in SMS nowadays.
There are no two opinions about the fact that communicating via SMS is surely a far more convenient and cheaper way with your pals, rather than calling them up. But when it comes to expressing emotions like anger, happiness and different moods in which a person may be nothing can beat than a personalized conversation over the phone where the other person can gauge our emotions with the help of change in the tone of our voice.
However, with the advent of emoticons in SMS culture, people who text a lot can heave a sigh of relief.
What are emotion icons?
An emoticon can be simply described as a pre-defined set of characters, which are found on the keyboard or the keypad of the phone. These emoticons, which are extensively being used in the text messages by people all over the world, were first introduced somewhere around late 1970s and early 1980s.
The need for emoticons was felt when people started having trouble in expressing their emotions over a plain text message. Most of the times, it would happen that the message sent by them would be misinterpreted by the recipient.
This is what triggered the need for emotion icons, which could be used along with text characters in order to convey the complete message to the recipient of the message. According to a number of surveys, it has been reported that the majority of the messages are done by the youth as compared to people who are older or in their middle ages, who prefer to make a call.
Also, people who are in relationships were among the ones who make avid use of this SMS service in order to text their partners. On the other hand, youngsters who were single, preferred to make use of the SMS service, just to remain in touch with their friends.
Who uses them more frequently?
Yet another study has revealed that among the youth, girls were found to be making use of emotion icons far more than boys do. Most of the boys simply prefer to send the text message without having to care about the emotion icons or smiley. Rather than making use of an emoticon, they preferred to text in addition to their message, about their current state of mood.
On the other hand, girls were found to be addicted to making use of emotion icons. The general theory which rules over the minds of girls in such state is that making use of emotion icons in their messages makes their SMS look far more appealing and would leave a better impression on the recipient.
Apart from this, some SMS users were also of the view that people who did not make use of emotion icons were considered to be un-cool, which had no knowledge about the latest emoticons being used around. Thus the need for making use of emotion icons is far more felt among the youngsters but the older generation still seems to be satisfied with the traditional mode of directly making a call for the means of communication.
